The Bundeswehr has closed a partnership with Google to implement a “private cloud of the Bundeswehr”. By 2027, two new cloud instances are to be built through the IT service provider BWI GmbH.

Bundeswehr relies on Google’s cloud services
For the provision of Google’s cloud services for the Bundeswehr, BWI GmbH has concluded a framework contract with the Google Cloud Public Sector-Deutschland GmbH. Part of the framework contract between the IT service provider of the Bundeswehr and the Google subsidiary is the procurement of the “Google Cloud Air-Gapped”.
In the next two years, two new cloud instances are to be created for the German armed forces. “Google Cloud Air-Gapped” becomes part of the “private cloud of the Bundeswehr”, as Google said.
It is a “sovereign solution” that BWI can install and operate in its own data centers. The IT solution is physically completely isolated from other Google systems or networks, which Google describes with the term “Air-Gapped”. This should guarantee digital sovereignty. This means:

Cloud solution should create a safe environment
The background to the new cooperation is the decision of the Bundeswehr to map certain business -critical applications on the “Business Technology Platform” (BTP) of SAP. This works in private deployment, i.e. in safe operation in your own data center or network.
However, the system is only compatible with certain other systems, which is why the Google Cloud Air-Gapped should be used for the “Private Cloud of the Bundeswehr” (PCLoudBW) in the future. “With the overall solution, the BWI, in cooperation with Google Cloud and SAP, can ensure an isolated, safe environment for the IT support of the Bundeswehr logistically administrative processes,” says the average.
The cloud effort is included in the Bundeswehr Cloud First Strategy. Because the BWI as the IT system house of the Bundeswehr wants to provide its IT services in a fundamentally cloud-based in the future.
