In the port of Los Angeles, a new power plant convert wave energy into electricity. The developers want to supply around 130 million people with green electricity.
The commercialization of wave energy has enormous potential. Not only the world energy rate predicts that twice as much electricity can be generated with wave energy as is currently being produced worldwide. Inna Braverman, co -founder of the energy company Eco Wave Power, is also convinced.
With a new one Wavy consisting of several hundred “dancing buoys”, the start-up wants to produce electricity for up to 130 million people in the future. A visionary approach that demonstrates the performance of the wave energy that has so far been less used.
So far, wave energy largely unused
For more than 15 years, Braverman has been working to convert the power of waves into electricity. So far, this source of renewable energy has been tapped rather little. The reason: Most developers try to use waves on the open sea. According to Braverman, this is extremely expensive. There are often damage that can also only be remedied on the high seas.
The alternative: an onshore wave energy technology that uses swimmers. They rise and drop with the wave movement and thus create a water pressure. A hydraulic system drives a generator on land and then supplies households with green electricity.
In the port of Los Angeles, such blue swimmers were installed on a distance of 13 kilometers. Every buoy has one Nominal output of ten kilowatts. The system has not yet been completed. After completion, however, it should supply up to 60,000 households in Los Angeles.
The US energy authority also estimates that wave energy could supply electricity for around 130 million people on the west coast of the United States alone. This corresponds to about a third of the entire North American electricity requirement.
Wave power plants also planned in Europe
In contrast to wind and sun power, the new technology is also characterized by high operational safety. It is less dependent on the weather and delivers energy around the clock.
For Braverman, the dancing buoys are the result of passionate work. “Soon […] I knew that the sun and wind bored me. Nothing innovative happened, ”the entrepreneur once described her passion in one interview.
With projects like this we prove that wave energy is not just the future – it is here and now. [Mit diesem Wellenenergieprojekt] Let’s open the door for a new age of clean energy for California and for the world.
The facility in Los Angeles is the second commercial project of Eco Wave Power. The first went into operation in Jaffa at the end of 2024, the port of Tel Aviv. It produces enough electricity for 100 households.
Braverman expects electricity to be used for 4.2 euros per kilowatt hour. This is cheaper than in wind and sun. In Taiwan, India and Portugal, the company is planning further projects.
US government supports wave power plant in Los Angeles
The expansion of the system in Los Angeles receives government support, for example from the “Marine Energy Technology Acceleration Act”, which is funded with over one billion dollars.
“Eco Wave Power writes history by using its innovative wave energy technology for the first time in US waters,” explains MP Nanette Díaz Barragán in her opening speech on the inauguration of the project.
“This milestone shows the enormous potential of wave energy – clean, renewable electricity for our communities, creation of jobs and protection of our environment.”
