The article ChatGPT vs. Google Gemini: The current models in comparison appeared first in the online magazine BASIC thinking. With our newsletter UPDATE you can start the day well informed every morning.

OpenAI changed the world with ChatGPT and gained a comfortable lead in the AI race. However, Google has been gaining ground with Gemini for months. We have therefore compared the current versions of ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
The alarm bells are currently ringing at OpenAI because company boss Sam Altman has personally declared Code Red. The reason: Google keeps making huge leaps with its AI and is hot on the heels of its big competitor ChatGPT. Some users and experts even believe that Gemini is already in the leadership position. To see for ourselves, we compared the current models from ChatGPT and Google Gemini.
ChatGPT 5.1 and Gemini 3 Pro in comparison
For a long time, ChatGPT was unchallenged in pole position. The competition could not keep up with both the quality of the AI and the number of users. But that was a thing of the past, because Google has broken away from the chasing pack and is rapidly catching up. Gemini AI (formerly Bard) is at par three years after ChatGPT was introduced.
With the Model 3 Pro at the latest, Gemini has some advantages over ChatGPT. But OpenAI is not yet beaten, as our comparison shows. ChatGPT also continues to make progress and the race is as close as ever. We examined which model suits which users and where the respective strengths and weaknesses lie based on several categories.
1. Dialogue and speech
When writing short texts ChatGPT still has a slight advantage and shows greater variance in language and storytelling. However, OpenAI’s models still seemed like classic chat bots in our conversations. Typical phrases often appeared that reminded us that we were dealing with a machine. The fact that ChatGPT often talked to us contributed to this impression. If you want to avoid the sterile tone and patronizing nature, you have to actively encourage the AI to do so.
Google has Gemini apparently trained to a more natural way of expressing themselves that makes conversations seem more human. When chatting, dialogue was often more varied and less stiff. Gemini used more figurative language and avoided the stereotypical nature of ChatGPT. When writing original texts with creative demands, these aspects came through, even if the latest version is linguistically less predictable.
There is no clear winner in this category. While Gemini seemed more like a human assistant to us, but stumbled when it came to creative texts, ChatGPT, in our opinion, is still slightly ahead when it comes to texting, but is less adept at small talk.
2. Long texts and tasks
In this area had ChatGPT often problems. The bigger the task we set, the more the AI got out of step – on several levels. On the one hand, the coherence always suffered, be it in the texts or in the “personality” of the AI itself. It was often observed that facts were mixed up if the chat contained too much information. On the other hand, extensive projects have to be divided over several chats because the limit of tokens is reached relatively quickly.
Significantly more tokens are available for a chat Gemini available. This means that the model can be filled with entire books or dozens of documents. Anyone working on a complex and lengthy task will find an ideal partner here. Of course, long conversations require the coherence mentioned above and Gemini did not disappoint us in this area either. Even the smallest details were retained and included in later answers significantly more often than with the competition.
In our tests, Google Gemini had clear advantages in long conversations. Both in terms of tokens and in processing masses of information, the AI is superior to OpenAI’s competitor.
3. Current knowledge
OpenAI has followed suit and ChatGPT now also connected to the Internet. So there are no longer any “cut-off dates” after which the AI’s knowledge ends. However, there is still room for improvement, as internet searches often felt more like a student’s research than a teacher’s lecture. People continued to hallucinate about current events.
Thanks to its existing infrastructure, Google obviously has a big advantage when it comes to web search – and that’s with Gemini apparently. The most accurate results were often presented to us with appropriate maps or graphics. This is a glimpse of how AI could further revolutionize the use of the Internet in the future.
Not only did Gemini 3 feel less hallucinating than ChatGPT during our conversations, but it also delivered significantly more comprehensive and visually appealing results. Everything seems to be from a single source and all tools are well integrated.
3. Logic
ChatGPT 5.1 fundamentally convinced us in terms of depth. The model took its time with complex logic puzzles and math problems. Before it responded, it analyzed the problem and corrected itself in the background. The error rate appears to be significantly lower than with previous versions of ChatGPT.
Gemini 3 Pro has a new “Deep Think” mode that allows the AI to calmly think about complex problems. Google was also able to make up ground in this area. Although it may take a while for the answer to be ready, the results are all the more sophisticated.
Both models managed to think first and then speak. In this respect, AI is much further along than it was a few months ago. For our prompts with complex tasks, sometimes Gemini and sometimes ChatGPT were better. However, coders still generally prefer OpenAI technology.
4. Image generation
When creating images was ChatGPT very precise in the implementation of our prompts. What the user asks for is usually delivered. However, mostly with the typical “AI look”. If you want to create creative works of art from the model, you should be able to write good prompts.
Gemini is much closer to photorealism. Skin textures, light sources and texts in the image were impressively lifelike. However, due to the high level of creativity, the accuracy in implementing the prompt sometimes suffered. In addition, the model more often refused to generate people for security reasons.
Although ChatGPT deserves praise for its accurate implementation of prompts, Gemini wins thanks to its more impressive images. Both AIs have image generators integrated directly into the chat.
Conclusion: ChatGPT and Gemini in comparison
In some areas it has ChatGPT still a small lead. This particularly applies to the creation of short texts and creative writing. The new personality options, on the other hand, are rather daunting and not very intuitive.
Overall has Gemini In many aspects, ChatGPT has not only caught up, but has apparently already overtaken it. The AI can at least be described as equivalent. Especially users who have a comprehensive task or are looking for a holistic partner instead of a chat bot have come to the right place.
It looks like Google already has a small lead and that OpenAI has to be careful not to be left behind. A difficult task given Google’s extensive ecosystem and resources.

As a Tech Industry expert, I believe that both ChatGPT and Google Gemini are impressive models in their own right, but they cater to different needs and use cases.
ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, is a language model that excels in generating human-like text and engaging in conversations with users. It is versatile and can be used for a wide range of applications, such as chatbots, content generation, and customer support. ChatGPT’s strength lies in its ability to understand and generate natural language responses, making it a valuable tool for businesses looking to automate customer interactions.
On the other hand, Google Gemini is a machine learning model designed specifically for generating code snippets and assisting developers in their programming tasks. Gemini leverages Google’s vast dataset of code repositories to provide accurate and relevant code suggestions, making it a valuable resource for developers looking to streamline their workflow and improve productivity.
While both models are impressive in their own right, they serve different purposes and cater to different needs within the tech industry. ChatGPT is ideal for businesses looking to enhance customer interactions and automate repetitive tasks, while Google Gemini is ideal for developers looking to improve their coding efficiency and productivity. Ultimately, the choice between ChatGPT and Google Gemini will depend on the specific requirements and use cases of the individual or organization.
