They’re extremely popular right now, but maneuvering an SUV through narrow one-way streets in the city or squeezing into a parking space can be frustrating. Why not opt for a small city car? The ADAC recommends these city cars.
On average, cars are getting bigger, which is because SUVs are leading the current sales statistics. But what feels like comfort in the country and on the highway can be really annoying in the city. If you want to get your car through narrow streets and into small parking spaces, it is better to choose a so-called city car. These city cars are not only easy to maneuver but also economical to maintain.
The ADAC recommends these city cars
The ADAC has examined around 500 models over the last five years and created an evaluation in which neither engine power nor maximum payload play a role. Instead, the evaluation is based on special factors that can make the difference in heavy traffic and narrow parking garages.
An ideal city car is defined above all by its maneuverability. Accordingly, points relevant to the test are the vehicle length and width without exterior mirrors. Of course, the smaller the better. Another criterion is the turning circle, which is often favored by rear-wheel drive in the best models. The ADAC also rates the clarity and all-round visibility. Aids such as parking sensors and CO2 emissions in city traffic are also included in the grade.
All city cars in the top ten ADAC rankings receive a grade of “good” (up to 2.5). The representatives are almost exclusively small cars with a length of well under four meters. In the following gallery we present these ten models, sorted by their overall rating.
10th place: VW up! and VW e-up!
The VW up! opens our top ten with the test score awarded by the ADAC 2.5. With a length of exactly 3.6 meters, the models are extremely compact. The turning circle of 9.8 meters enables comfortable maneuvering even in city traffic. Buyers have the choice between a combustion engine and an electric version.
