With the help of digitalization, cities should become more efficient, more sustainable and more progressive. Places that are already well connected are also called smart cities. In Germany too, people are trying to become “smarter”. In the following ranking we show you the German cities that are the most progressive.

Digitalization: The “smartest” cities in Germany
Bitkom has one Digital ranking of 82 major German cities with at least 100,000 inhabitants. To do this, the IT industry association recorded, checked and qualified over 13,000 data points in five subject areas – from online citizen services to sharing products for mobility and intelligent traffic lights to broadband availability.
The total of 37 indicators are calculated from 162 parameters per city. They result in an overall index on a scale from zero to 100 points. In each subject area, additional innovative projects outside the indicators considered were recorded and rated with a maximum of five percent of the achievable total points. In the following ranking we show you the ten German cities that are ahead when it comes to digitalization.
10th place: Ulm
Ulm comes in tenth place in the ranking with one Index of 79.8. The city in Baden-Württemberg is characterized above all by its smart traffic control. The system is intended to reduce congestion and optimize traffic flow. Ulm also offers its citizens an interactive platform through which they can communicate directly with the city administration.
