Because they have developed a new lithium ion manager from lithium, antimon and scandium, which can lead lithium ions more than 30 percent faster than all previously known substances.

Lithium ions for faster current flow

For the improved lithium ion director, the researchers have replaced part of the lithium in the connection lithium-antimonide with the metal scandium. As a result of this composition, gaps in the crystal grille of the conductor material, which are referred to as empty spots, arise specifically.

These gaps, in turn, make it easier for the lithium ions to move better and faster, which leads to a particularly fast current flow. But not only the increased speed is an advantage of this discovery. Because the material also offers thermal stability and can be easily made with proven chemical processes. Batteries could not only become more powerful, but also more secure and more suitable for electric cars, for example, and minimize the risk of fire.

“Our result is currently a significant progress in basic research,” explains Prof. Thomas F. Fässler from the Chair of Inorganic Chemistry with a focus on new materials at the TU Munich. “With the installation of small quantities of scandium, we came across a new principle that could prove to be directional for other element combinations.”

Completely new substance class discovered

With their discovery, the researchers were able to increase ion conductivity to 42 millisiometers per centimeter – a new world record. So far, a maximum of 32 millisiometers have been reached here.

Until the new lithium ion manager in battery cells is actually used, according to Fässler, “many tests are still necessary”. However, he is confident that “because materials that can lead both ions and electrons are particularly suitable as an addition to electrodes”.

But the researchers not only increased the conductivity enormously, but also discovered a completely new class of substance. “Our combination consists of lithium-antimon and can also be transferred to lithium phosphorus. While the previous record holder was based on lithium sulfur and needed five other elements to optimize, we only need Scandium as a further component,” explains first author Jingwen Jiang, researcher at Tumint.ENGY Research GmbH.
