AI Democracy Artificial Intelligence Truth

Artificial intelligence is fundamentally changing the Internet and our society – and not just for the better. Because content and debates become more superficial, fundamentally distorted or simply wrong. This not only has negative effects on the quality of information and digital interaction. AI endangers real discourses, our social coexistence and ultimately also democracy. A commentary analysis.

How AI distorts truth and endangers democracy

  • Whether dictatorships, media or populist parties: more and more political actors are specifically using AI to deceive people, spread false or misleading information or distort debates. The most common goals: attention, economic benefits or political power. The most common deceptive maneuvers: The distribution of AI-generated images, videos or content that does not correspond to reality or falsifies or suppresses facts.
  • They probably still do greater danger: Deception on a grand scale. So-called AI swarms could soon suggest a public consensus and secretly distort and disintegrate democracies. The background is controlled AI bots that have a memory, coordinate towards common goals and can vary the tone and content.
  • Not just many naive users naively adopt AI content without checking it. AI systems themselves are sometimes based on false information that they receive from the internet. It is even possible to specifically manipulate language models. British search engine expert Jon Goodey provided an example of this. He published on LinkedIn as part of an experiment a contribution about a supposed Google update that never existed. Numerous users, but also media, took over the content, which was put together by an AI, without checking it. This led to it even being recorded by some AI models themselves.

AI creates a circular adulteration system

The great story of one almost overwhelming AIwhich knows neither limits nor the impossible, has long been convenient for many companies and the media. Now it’s crumbling more and more. Because: Artificial intelligence is not an oracle, but an echo chamber.

It reinforces what is there: facts and judgments, but also Half-knowledge, prejudices and lies. The truth is by no means abolished, but it is diluted. Because: Disinformation is not a new phenomenon. But AI can be used to scale them. Because what people once had to cobble together can now be automated.

Or in short: AI doesn’t need an orchestra to be used for deceptionbut just a conductor and a digital choir singing the same interest-driven score – complete with automated applause. The most perfidious thing, however, is that the boundaries between deception and error are blurred. Because AI now “learns” from incorrect content and creates a circular system of falsification.

Voices

  • In one Article In the renowned journal Science, the authors describe how dangerous AI swarms can be. Jonas R. Kunst from BI Norwegian Business School and one of the lead authors: “The danger is no longer just fake news, but that the foundation of democratic discourse – independent voices – collapses when a single actor can control thousands of unique, AI-generated profiles.”
  • David Garcia, Professor of Social and Behavioral Data Science at the University of Konstanzin one statement: “Beyond the deception or security of individual chatbots, we need to explore new threats that arise from the interaction of many AI actors. To do this, it is essential that we study these AI actors using behavioral science methods and analyze their collective behavior when they interact in large groups.”
  • Researchers at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the University of Vienna have another one further AI influence identifiedwhich can be a threat to democracy and is often fueled by the media. Study author Christoph Fuchs about this: “When people have the feeling that they are being displaced by artificial intelligence, they express doubts about the political system – these people are less satisfied with democracy and its institutions.”

AI will not collapse democracy, but it will fray it

The good news First: AI is unlikely to cause a sudden collapse of democracy. But it will continue to be used and misused and its technical functionality will reduce itself to absurdity, thereby endangering and fraying free social structures.

Public debates could become a backdrop in which real voices speak against an army of synthetic and manipulated content compete – and could lose or have to be willing to compromise. Problem: AI-generated content would then lead to consensus no longer being a result, but a controlled fake product.

At the same time it is already beginning a new competition. On the one hand: AI-supported manipulation. On the other: enlightenment, which is sometimes itself based on AI. In order not to continue to distort the truth and destroy democracies, we need testing algorithms, proof of origin, and digital watermarks.

Means: The Battle between deception and enlightenment could become a permanent situation – especially since loopholes can never be ruled out. On the one hand, fundamental questioning is therefore appropriate in the age of AI. But on the other hand, despite all the enlightenment, there is a threat of a society in constant doubt.

The bitterest part is that a technology intended to democratize knowledge could make trust one of the most scarce resources. In the meantime, I’m actually just hoping that the so-called AI bubble will finally burst.

As a Tech Industry expert, I am deeply concerned about how AI can distort truth and potentially destroy democracy. AI algorithms are designed to analyze large amounts of data and make decisions based on patterns and trends, but they can also be influenced by biases and misinformation.

AI can be used to manipulate information and spread fake news, leading to a distorted view of reality for the public. This can have serious consequences for democracy, as it can sway public opinion and undermine trust in institutions.

Furthermore, AI can be used to target individuals with personalized content, creating echo chambers and reinforcing existing beliefs. This can lead to polarization and division within society, making it difficult to have meaningful discussions and compromise on important issues.

It is crucial for tech companies and policymakers to be aware of the potential dangers of AI and take steps to mitigate its negative impacts. This includes promoting transparency and accountability in AI systems, as well as educating the public about the importance of critical thinking and media literacy.

Ultimately, we must strive to harness the power of AI for good and ensure that it is used in a way that upholds democratic values and promotes a more informed and engaged society.
