Does the IBIS battery from Stellantis revolutionize electromobility?

Stellantis, which includes the brands Citroën, Opel and Peugeot, wants to make energy storage with its ibis battery more efficient, sustainable and cheaper. The group has been working with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and researchers for six years.

Among other things, the French battery manufacturer Juice as well as researchers from Sorbonne Université and the Université Paris-Saclay are involved in the project. The team has now sent its first prototype vehicle to the practical test with the “groundbreaking” Intelligent Battery Integrated System (IBIS). This should improve the use of space in the vehicle and simplify maintenance.

To achieve this, the research team has integrated the inverter and the charging electronics directly into the battery. As a result, around 40 kilograms of weight can be saved in the vehicle. In addition, up to 17 liters of volume are released, which according to Stellantis also “enables better aerodynamics and design flexibility”.

The performance of the battery could also be improved. Accordingly, energy efficiency in the WLTC cycle increases by ten percent. With the same battery size, a performance gain of 15 percent can also be achieved.

In addition, the integration of the components has an impact on the charging duration. The manufacturer specifies a reduction in loading time by 15 percent. In the case of a 7-kW change of change, this means a loading time of six instead of seven hours. At the same time, the system achieves an energy saving of ten percent.

Technology could not only be used in electromobility

Stellantis also promises a simplified maintenance because the IBIS battery with a working voltage of less than 60 volts. Therefore, it is certain to open the battery without special safety measures.

The French research team now wants to research Ibis technology in a new Peugeot E-3008 in practical tests under realistic driving conditions. These should now provide data and “pave the way for the integration of IBIS technology in series vehicles from Stellantis by the end of the decade”.

Stellantis does not only see IBIS technology as a “sustainable electrification” for the automotive industry. It offers potential “for a large number of areas of application”, such as in data centers, in rail transport or in air, space and shipping.

The battery also offers better prerequisites for reuse second-life batteries. For example, after use in the electric car, this could be used more easily than inpatient memory.
