An Australian artist and engineer has released a tool designed to hide AI content. Shop Evader is a free browser extension for Chrome and Firefox.
The amount of AI-generated content on the internet is constantly increasing. ChatGPT, Gemini and Co. now create all sorts of texts, images and videos. These contents are now often difficult to distinguish from man-made ones.
There are also a large number of so-called AI slop contributions. Although these are obviously AI-generated, their high volume makes it difficult to find high-quality content.
Browser extension hides AI content
The Australian artist and environmental engineer Tega Brain has therefore developed a tool that is intended to counteract the flood of AI. The so-called Slop Evader is a free browser extension available for Chrome and Firefox.
After installation, you have the option of opening a new search window using an icon in the toolbar. There you can enter search terms to find content on Google, Reddit or YouTube. Pinterest, Stack Exchange, Quora and Mumsnet are also available.
The highlight of the extension is that it basically just adds a time parameter and the respective platform to your Google search. For example, if you search for “What should I do if the cheese doesn’t stay on my pizza?”, you’ll only get results published before November 30, 2022. This date marks the launch of ChatGPT and therefore the beginning of the AI era.

As a result, you will not see any results generated by artificial intelligence. Thanks to the time parameter, the browser extension also works with images and videos by simply not showing you AI content.
In addition to the Slop Evader, Tega Brain has other projects like that Synthetic Messenger published. This is a botnet made up of 100 bots that searches for news about climate change on the Internet, calls it up and clicks on every advertisement it contains. This is intended to increase awareness of these articles.

As a Tech Industry expert, I have mixed feelings about the Slop Evader browser extension. On one hand, I understand the desire for users to have control over the type of content they are exposed to, especially when it comes to AI-generated content that may not always be accurate or trustworthy. However, hiding this content could also prevent users from being informed about important developments and advancements in the tech industry.
It is important for users to be able to discern between reliable and unreliable sources of information, and simply hiding AI content may not be the most effective way to achieve this. Instead, I believe that education and awareness about the capabilities and limitations of AI technology is crucial in helping users make informed decisions about the content they consume.
Overall, while the Slop Evader browser extension may provide a temporary solution for those who are skeptical of AI-generated content, I believe that a more comprehensive approach is needed to address the larger issue of misinformation and disinformation in the tech industry. This includes promoting media literacy and critical thinking skills among users, as well as holding tech companies accountable for the content they produce.
