In April 2026, 249,163 new cars were registered in Germany. This corresponds to an increase of 2.7 percent year-on-year. While purely electric cars are permanently overtaking petrol engines for the first time with an increase of 41.3 percent, a classic combustion engine remains at the top. Based on the official KBA figures, we’ll show you which ten models sold best in April – and why one manufacturer is on the podium three times.
The automotive industry in Germany is recovering – but slowly. After the surprisingly strong March, the positive trend suffered a slight setback in April. Although 249,163 new registrations represent a decline of 15.3 percent compared to the previous month, there is still a slight increase of 2.7 percent year-on-year. A total of 948,567 cars were sold from January to April, an increase of 4.5 percent compared to 2025.
These cars sold best
According to the current figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), Volkswagen confidently defends its top position with a market share of 18.5 percent, but at the same time has to accept a loss of 6.7 percent. Behind them, Mercedes (9.3 percent) and BMW (9.0 percent) are in a close race for second and third place. Audi made the biggest jump among German manufacturers with an increase of 19.0 percent. Skoda remains the most successful import brand with 8.5 percent market share and an increase of 12.2 percent.
The historic change from March continues when it comes to drive types. Purely electric cars have 64,350 new registrations and thus a market share of 25.8 percent (an increase of 41.3 percent compared to the same month last year). Classic petrol engines fall further behind with 53,420 units. Hybrid vehicles remain the strongest segment with 97,753 registrations.

10th place: Fiat Ducato
There’s a little surprise at the start of our top ten. The Fiat Ducato lands with us 3,456 New registrations in tenth place. This makes the Ducato only one of two cars from import companies that make it into our ranking.
